I think my child is being abused. What can I do?
- Remain calm
- Try not to communicate your anxieties to your child
- Pick a time when things are relaxed - perhaps bath time. Ask your
child if anyone has told him or her to keep a secret
- Ask you child if anyone has touched them - you can point to a part
of the body
- Don't get angry or accuse anyone in front of the child - this will
only make the child more frightened to tell
- If your child does not tell you immediately, say that you would like
to talk again later
- Don't press for details or put words in your child's mouth
- If you think abuse has occurred, contact either your GP, the police
or social services
- Give your child lots of hugs if your child feels comfortable with
touching. Tell him or her how much you love them
- Reassure your child that he or she has done nothing wrong
- You can download Why My Child
or the Keep them Safe booklets
- Have a look at the Kidscape Keepsafe
